2 weeks ago we were in Playa for a short vacation. Strolling down Avenida 5 till we reached the Cozumel Ferry Landing, we can across a group of Mayan Mummers and a performance of the Voladores de Papantla (pole flyers). The whole atmosphere set next to the complex Playa archway, was alive and festive. The weather was perfect ... hot ... coming from one of the most dreadful NYC winters in years. The snap shooting ability coupled with the sharp lens ensured that the Ricoh GR was the best possible photographic tool I could have had with me at the time.
I have tried to capture the spirit as much as the spectacle. These players perform with as much professionalism as they do with pride and passion. Many believe, as one of the mummers later told me, that the conquistadors' rapine resulted in far more than the loss of wealth. In fact their greatest regret is that the Yucatan has lost its central core, its pre-Columbian identity.
